A Guide to Mutrah: Exploring the Heart of Old Muscat in 2026

While the rest of Muscat modernizes, Mutrah remains a vibrant window into the past. It’s a place where the scent of frankincense fills the air, and the sunset reflects off the white-washed buildings along the harbor. As a local, Mutrah is my favorite place to take friends—it’s lively, historic, and perfectly walkable.

1.Stroll the Mutrah Corniche

Start your journey on the 3km waterfront promenade. It’s lined with lattice-work buildings and offers a stunning view of the Sultan’s yachts and traditional wooden dhows.

  • Pro Tip: Look for the Riyam Censer (the giant white incense burner monument) at the end of the bay. It’s the unofficial symbol of Muscat!

2.Get Lost in Mutrah Souq

This is one of the oldest marketplaces in the Arab world. Inside, it’s a maze of narrow alleys under a traditional timber roof.

  • What to Buy: Genuine Omani Frankincense (look for the “Hojari” grade), silver Khanjars (daggers), and colorful pashminas.
  • Bargaining: It’s expected! Start by asking for a 20% discount and do it with a smile.
  • Timings: Most shops close for a “siesta” between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM. The best time to visit is after 5:00 PM when the lanterns are lit.

3.Climb Mutrah Fort

Built by the Portuguese in the 1580s, this fort sits high on a rocky ridge.

  • The View: This is the best photo spot in Muscat. You get a panoramic view of the entire harbor and the mountains.
  • Visiting Info (2026): Entry is 3 OMR for non-residents and 1 OMR for residents (bring your ID!). It’s open daily from 8:00 AM to 11:00 PM.

4.The Fish Market

At the northern end of the Corniche, you’ll find a futuristic white building. This is the new Fish Market.

  • Local Insight: Go early (7:00 AM – 9:00 AM) to see the fishermen bringing in the “Catch of the Day.” It’s a great way to see authentic Omani life.
