Your 2026 Guide to Oman’s “Maldives”

Located about 42km off the coast of Muscat, this archipelago of nine uninhabited islands is the crown jewel of Omani marine life. With white porcelain sand and water so clear you can see the coral from the boat, it’s a world-class destination for snorkeling and diving. Because it’s a protected reserve, the ecosystem is incredibly healthy—expect to see more turtles here in one hour than you might see in a lifetime elsewhere

The Three “Must-See” Spots

1. Turtle City

This is the most famous snorkeling spot in the islands.

  • The Sight: It’s a shallow reef where Hawksbill and Green Sea Turtles gather to feed. They are incredibly calm and often swim right alongside snorkelers.
  • Developer Tip: Use a “Video Background” or a high-res gallery here. Seeing a turtle in 4K against turquoise water is the ultimate “click-magnet” for your site.

2. The Aquarium

Known by divers as the best spot in the islands.

  • What’s Below: It’s a deeper site teeming with massive schools of fish, moray eels, and harmless Blacktip Reef Sharks.
  • Visibility: In March, visibility is often at its peak (up to 20-30 meters).

3. The Island Hike (Climb for the View)

During the “Open Season” (November – April), you can actually step onto the islands.

  • The View: Take the short, steep hike up the rocky hills. You’ll get a 360-degree panoramic view of the turquoise lagoons that look exactly like the Maldives.

📍 Expert 2026 Travel Tips :

  • The “Open” Window: March is the perfect time to go. Starting May 1st, 2026, the beaches will close to the public for turtle nesting season. You can still snorkel from boats during the summer, but you won’t be able to walk on the sand.
  • Departure Points: Most tours leave from Al Mouj Marina (The Wave) or Seeb Port. Al Mouj is more “luxury,” while Seeb is often slightly cheaper.
  • 2026 Pricing: * Half-Day Snorkeling: Approx. 25–35 OMR ($65–$90) per person.
    • Full-Day / BBQ Trip: Approx. 45–55 OMR.
    • Note: Prices usually include the required permit (which is 3 OMR for foreigners).
  • Whale Shark Season: While you might get lucky, remember that the peak “Whale Shark” window is usually September to November.

⚠️ Essential “Eco” Rules :

  • No Touching: It is strictly illegal to touch the turtles or the coral. The rangers are active, and fines are heavy.
  • Sunscreen: Please recommend “Reef Safe” sunscreen to your readers. Regular sunscreen chemicals bleach the coral.
  • Permits: You cannot go to the islands on your own without a permit from the Environment Authority. It’s much easier for your readers to book with a licensed operator who handles the permit for them.
