A Local’s Guide to Oman’s Architectural Crown Jewel

If you only have time for one stop in Muscat, this is it. Inaugurated in 2001 to celebrate the 30th year of the late Sultan Qaboos’s reign, this mosque is a breathtaking fusion of Omani, Islamic, and modern architectural styles. As a local, I never tire of its peaceful gardens and the way the sun reflects off its 300,000 tons of Indian sandstone.

Inside the Main Prayer Hall

This is where the true magic happens. Two things inside once held world records and are still among the largest on Earth:

  • The Persian Carpet: A single hand-woven masterpiece covering 4,343 square meters. It took 600 weavers four years to complete and contains 1.7 billion knots.
  • The Swarovski Chandelier: Hanging from the 50-meter-high dome, this 8.5-ton chandelier features 600,000 crystals and 1,122 halogen lamps. It’s roughly the size of a small house!

Symbolism in Stone

Notice the five minarets. The main one stands at 91.5 meters, while the others are 45 meters. Together, they represent the Five Pillars of Islam. The architecture blends styles from across the Islamic world—look for Persian arches, Ottoman domes, and traditional Omani timbered ceilings
